Default House Guest Abandoned Her Pets

    HI folks,

    I need some advice:

We had a house guest -Nicky-19-for about 7 weeks. She is my wife's godchild and needed a place to stay because she lost her apartment.

She called on a Sunday night and moved in that same night. We said she could stay in our finished basement. She brought with her 3 cats and 2 dogs. (We knew she had a couple of pets but not that many). At first she took care of the pets, but that ended and she stopped taking her pets out. her pets started to make a mess of our basement. We had to remind her to take care of her pets. this lasted for a while. we gave her an ultimatum - find a place to move to and take care of the pets.

She sort of moved out two weeks ago , but left her 3 cats. We haven't heard from her since. We called her mother (she is out of state) and she said that Nicky was in the hospital for a couple of days. Some of her stuff is still here and we are tending to the cats. We have tried to called at least a dozen times but have not received a response. Her mother can't help and it appears she isn't taking our calls now.

I have started to clean the basement but it will take some time to get the smell out. also I fear that our furniture has been ruined as well. I lost a video project (worht $1000's) because I can not work in the basement because of the smell. (My office is there).

Here is where I need help: We feel she isn't coming back, that she has abandoned her cats here. The SPCA will not take her cats becasue they are not our property. They don't want to get sued.

What can I do about her pets?

Some other info: we never charged her rent or for anything nor have we asked for anything. she was a guest. she never had mail or phone calls coming to us.

    Thanks,

    RTD

Get an enzyme-based cleaner for your basement, such as Odormute. Using chemical cleaners on cat urine can sometimes backfire, sealing the smell into the item you clean.

Is there a governmental "animal control" officer for your city? How far away does her mom live? Also, ask the SPCA about any "cat rescues" that may be willing to "foster" the cats during this person's absence (or search Google, check Craig's List, etc.)
