I live in Texas and I was wondering if it was true that a sex offender can't live within 2 1/2 miles of a school. Thanks for any info.

The default "child safety zone" under Texas law is 1,000 feet, subject to modification by the court under specified circumstances. ("... the judge shall establish a child safety zone applicable to the defendant by requiring as a condition of community supervision that the defendant... not... go in, on, or within 1,000 feet of a premises where children commonly gather, including a school, day-care facility, playground, public or private youth center, public swimming pool, or video arcade facility...." See Article 42.12, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Sec. 13b(a)(1)(B).)
Municipalities may impose larger "child safety zones".
Although, at this point, I know of no town or municpality that has instituted a 2.5 mile 'safety zone'.
OP,
The strictest town in our area currently is probably Richardson. The safety zone is 2000 feet and the ordinance covers some 95%-97% of the city.
If you are talking about all the flap in Mansfield, then no...it's not true.![]()
Thanks a bunch you 2!
True. I applaud Richardson's intentions to keep the children safe from these perverts, but the question remains: do these law TRULY do anything g to keep the children safe?
I recall in Iowa these laws received fierce opposition from police officers and prosecutors. The law made several molesters have to move to rural areas thus making it very difficult for law enforcement to keep tabs on them. I believe it also discouraged some from even registering.
Nope......do these law TRULY do anything g to keep the children safe?
Are churches included in the Child Safety Zone?
