Default Criminal Charges For Attempted Theft Of A Bag

    Hi,

I've gone through the forums to make sure there wasn't an incident similar to mine, to not waste anybodys' time, but i couldn't find the information I needed.

    Story:
I took someone's bag in a library, was apprehended by the owner going down the stairs. There were no valuables in the bag (only textbooks) but upon being called by the campus police (i am a student at the university) the officer informed me that i was being charged with a criminal offense and would receive a court date later where i was to appear.

    Brief Questions:
    1. (this is in Canada). Am i subject to a deferral of sorts? Ie. take a class and or do community service to get charges dropped?
    2. There has been other thefts in the library, is it possible for them to pin various thefts on me?
    3. What is the severity of the charge and what punishments should i expect to recieve? (I never left the building)
    4. Should I expect to get kicked out of university?

Thank you for much for your time, I really appreciate your help in my time of need. I understand that most of you would recommend that I get a lawyer, which I am trying to do but its the weekend.

Again, Thanks for your time. looking forward to your input.

    0. Textbooks are valuable. If they were not, you wouldn't have been trying to steal them.

    1. Ask a local criminal defence lawyer.

    2. If you have committed other thefts, it's possible that the will figure that out now that they've caught you.

    3. The penalty depends upon the charge and your record. This is another thing to discuss with your criminal defence lawyer.

    4. It's within the realm of possibility. It depends upon your University's rules and policies.

Thank your for your quick and clearcut answers, I really appreciate it.

I have a clean record to date, and I was charged with a "Criminal Offence for theft".

My other question regarding the matter is if "attempted theft" and actual "theft" are synonymous.

My last question is if i should lie about past thefts in court or to my public defence lawyer.

Sorry if i appear ignorant in my statement, but I am honestly unsure about what to do.

    Regards,

You can look up the word "Attempt" in the dictionary - the definition of that word's not complicated. From what you say, you completed the offense and then were caught by your victim, so there's no reason you would have to be charged with attempt.

Nobody here is going to tell you to lie to a court.
