I work for a small security company in North Dakota. Recently they have issued a notice stating that they will be requiring all employees to complete 32 hours of training a year. Training is not only unpaid, but each employee must pay $10 per hour of class time. Classes are held once a month for 4 hour periods outside of regular work scheduling. These classes are not required by state, federal, or the North Dakota Private Investigation and Security Board. Classes are held at our main area of business and consist of the owner of the business reading a prepared outline of the class topic or going over our basic manual and explaining it. Costs of giving the classes are minimal.
Please tell me there is something illegal about this. My employer has already proven himself unethical and I don't wish to pay $320 a year just to keep my job.
