Exclamation Emancipation In New York at Age 19

I understand that you must be a minor between 16-18 to become emancipated from your parents. I have recently been kicked out of my home and had to rent an apartment, get a full time job and drop out of school. I really just want to know how I'd be able to get state funding or the opportunity to take out a loan without a co-signer to be able to continue my education at a University. I don't know where to start or where to go to find out information about this. If anyone can help or direct me in a direction where I can find help please let me know. Thanks so much.

Start by doing an online search. You will need to fill out FAF forms. This determines your elegibility for aide and loans. Here is the link: http://www.fafsaonline.com/financial...php?ysm_f08_01
It would be in your best interest to start at the community college level. English 101 will have the same content there as it will have at the university and at half the cost. If you call the college and set up an appointment with the admission programs, they will be able to help you. Good luck.

You need to talk with the financial aid department at the college you want to attend.

You are already considered to be at the age of majority and can be legally held responsible for any contract agreements that you enter into. It is up to the lender if they want to give you a loan without a co-signer or not.

FAFSA doesn't recognize emancipation when considering whether or not a person is independent or not. You would have to answer yes to one of the questions that are outlined here. However, if you are recognized as having independent status, that only allows you to fill out the form without using your parents' income information.

People have difficulties trying to get aid when the parents refuse to give out their information.
