Default Job Applications After Civil Demand Is Paid

Last year I was caught shoplifting at a Nordstrom's Rack in CA. I was detained, confessed, and they confiscated the items stolen, and then told me that I was eligible for the Admonishment program (first time offense, ever, for anything), in which I would pay the civil demand and agree to not enter any Nordstrom's store or those of its affiliates for a period of 2 years. The police were not called at all. I signed the form and left, and then called the Civil Claims office and received the total of the civil demand.

I have since paid the civil demand and have not entered any Nordstrom's stores, and no criminal charges have ever been filed against me. Very few people I know have any knowledge of this incident and I would very much prefer to keep it that way, as it is obviously not something I am proud of.

My question is about job applications: One I am currently completing, for a retail position, asks if I "have ever been convicted of a crime (misdemeanor or felony) by a civilian or military court?" I can't find my paperwork and can't exactly remember if my offense was defined as either of these. But I was hoping that maybe someone could give me a general answer as to how I would answer this question. Also, will it show up on any retail shoplifting database, and if it does, am I obligated to disclose it? ANY advice is much appreciated.

You were not convicted of any crime related to that incident in any way. At least that one Nordstroms store has record of you, I can't immagine it giving you a problem with a job applicdation however.

That is correct there is no record however its possible Norstoms might belong to a retail database. If they do they might have entered your nam ein that database meaning any other retailer who also subscribes to said database can see you were caught shoplifting. Since its retail work your looking into you might inquire with Norstoms if they do indeed place names in this retail database. In reality you have no crimnal record from this event as no Police were called, no court etc. You will not b elieing by saying no when asked about convictions fars as this event but if you are in this database it can keep you from being hired. I might add that if a LP (present when you were stopped at Norstoms) has changed jobs and now works your new retailer or has a friend who works your new store they might divulge fact you were stopped for shoplifting
