Default Police Academy Enrollment With A Misdemeanor Record

My Name is Joe. i am age 21 , almost 22.
Right before i Turned 21 in April I was charged with a 2nd degree misdemeanor ( First Offense ) For Poss. Of Paraphenalia. There were No Drugs. There were No pipes. Just a Scale they said had Marijuana residue on it.
I was placed on pre-trial Intervention where I am drug tested 2 times weekly , random , for 12 months. I am on month 10 and want to know , Since i have no previous offenses, and Only one Traffic Violation that I attended driving school for to lose the points; If I attend a Police academy, and apply to become an officer, Will an Expunged Misdemeanor impact my eligibility?

Since you did not indicate your state, the answer will be based upon federal law with regard to qualifications ... no, a misdemeanor conviction - expunged or not - for possession of marijuana will not exclude you from employment as a peace officer.

That being said, individual agencies MAY choose to disqualify you based upon this past activity.

I do not believe FL (or any state) has a mandatory disqualifier for a misdemeanor conviction for marijuana. But, as I said, an agency MIGHT have a problem with it.

The more time and good deeds (good job history, education, etc.) you put between the act and you, the better off you will be.

Here's some info on becoming a police officer in the state of Fl.:

Successful completion of F.B.A.T, C.J.B.A.T, or FDLE Police Examination

    • Passing score on the city's written entrance examination
    • Must be at least 19 years of age
    • Must have a high school diploma or GED
    • Proof of a valid driver’s license at time of application; Proof of valid State of Florida Driver’s license - Class D or E – prior to hire.

    • Must be a United States citizen
    • Must have sight in each eye of 20/50 without corrective lenses, or 20/30 with correcting lenses.
    • Must have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury or false statement in accord with Florida State Statute 943.13
    • Must undergo a medical exam, to include a toxicology screening at candidate’s expense. Providing the screening results are negative, the fee will be reimbursed.
    • Successful completion of a City-administered physical agility test.
    • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation. The driving record of an applicant is a key element of this process. Applicants with convictions for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or narcotics will be automatically disqualified.
