Well I'll start with the basic info.
State: Colorado
Age:22
Value of stolen goods: $177
College Student
Well this morning I was at a local store picking up some goods for my employer. I wandered a bit while getting the supplies and noticed a couple of items that I needed. Just a few tools that I had been stolen from my shop a few months back and I hadn’t had the money to replace yet.
In a lapse blank in judgment I took a few and pocketed them. I wish I could tell you what I was thinking, needless to say I'm an idiot. I have never done anything like this in my life. My record is as cleans as a whistle. I'm not sure what I was thinking this morning. So I went and paid for the goods that I had been getting for my employer (I paid with a company card for those) and left.
Well I was approached as I left and asked about the items. They in fact knew exactly what the items were. Took me to a room blah blah blah, same as every other post on this board. Police were called. I cooperated to the best of my ability, yes sirs and all that, did the best I could. Ticket was written for a court summons at the end of next month. I was banned from the store for a year and signed a form that said if I came on the property again I could be arrested for trespassing. I as well said that I would pay the Civil restitution to the store for $200. So far everything is perfectly clear to me.
The police officer said that I would most likely be given a diversion, or something like that. Which is exactly what I want. I mean seriously, I am guilty, its just so dumb, this is totally out of character for me. I would love to keep this off my record. So where do I go from here. I cant afford an attorney (if I could I would have simply paid for the goods in the first place). But I am pretty sure that a diversion is the way I want to go. So when I go to court for my summons should I request a public defender, or will... well I just dont know.
I'm not sure what to expect at all when I go to court. Will I simply talk to a Judge and we will work this stuff out, or will I have to talk to a City Attorney before talking to the Judge...
Help me out here folks, I'm scared and confused. The more I understand about whats going to happen the better I feel.
Thanks in advance folks.
