Default Workman Mistake: Who Pays For Repairs?

Recently, while running a snake and augur to clear my sewer line, the plumbers broke the augur bit and then a retrieving tool in the line. The line is now plugged by their broken equipment. They told me that the basement floor will have to be broken up in order to retrieve the parts then replace the pipe, redo the cement floor and retile. Who's responbible for the cost of these repairs?

Generally, the contractor who caused the damage is responsible.

Reputable contractors carry liability insurance for just such occasions.
