Default First Time Shoplifting In New York

On valentine's day, my boyfriend and I went to walmart and he attempted to steal about $40 worth of merchandise. I knew about it, and let him use me for cover.

Walmart security caught us before we went outside and we were pretty cooperative. Unfortunately, they called the cops because my boy didn't want to tell security his social security number. They searched my purse, and found a small bag with a few weed stems in it. (I'm not actually sure where that came from, I found it in my car) They said that because it was such a small amount, that they'd throw it out.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect. I'd consult a professional, but i really don't have the time or money to do that. I'm 18 and this is my first 'offense'. I feel bad about the entire thing, and i'm pissed at myself for going along with my stupid boyfriend's idea.

You can expect a civil demand letter, probably within a week or two from walmart for 200$ or more most likely, you will also want to speak to a criminal defense lawyer as you are facing charges. Ask the lawywer about diversion programs in your area, which if you qualify for, you will not face formal criminal charges.. If you can't afford a lawyer as you stated above, when you end up in court plead not guilty and request a public defender. You are very fortunate hey threw out the weed ( or smoked it, whatever ) instead of turning it in. Did the cops give you a court date?

I've been having panic attacks over this whole thing. Ugh, why was i so dumb? Well, how would i plead 'not guilty'? My boyfriend gave back the $40 of merchandise, so they know that he had it, isn't that kind of an indication of 'guilty'? I just don't know what to do or say..

can this info leak into my current job?

When you are asked how you plead, just say not guilty and I need a public defender, that is unless you find the money for a lawyer. Not guilty is just a way to get time to speak to your lawywer, it will not increase your punishment or anything. It is possible this info could link to your job, espicially if you're convicted.

thank you so much for replying as fast as you are. I really appreciate this. I was also wondering if someone could tell me if it would be preferable to plead 'no contest', or if that's just a bad idea..

What you should do is talk to an Attorney and decide the best plea with him/her
