Dear Sir/Maam:
I am J-1 visa holder subject to the 2-year rule. My visa has expired last year but my J-1 visa (research scholar) eligibility is still active since I'm still in my program. I'm in South Carolina. My fiance, who is a US citizen, and I are planning to get married here in the US soon and then travel to my home country for the honeymoon and for a very important family affair. But since my visa has expired, I know I will have to apply for a new one for me to enter the US again. Will it be a good idea to still apply for a J-1 visa even if I'm already married to a US citizen? Would J-1 be the quickest way back to the US since I am still a research scholar and changing the status of my J1 visa to spouse visa would require a 2-year rule waiver and lots of waiting time? I would also like to know if my married status will give me problems in my J-1 visa application. I would really appreciate any guidance regarding what our best options are.
Thank you very much.
