What happens if a gun show comes to town and a felon tries to purchase a shotgun/rifle?
I know they do the back ground check then and there, but is that breaking a law trying to purchase them? And if so, what would happen?

In some states a Felon can purchase a gun with a permit. Generally these are handled through the local Police or Sheriff's departments. It's best to check with your local law enforcement office to see what permits are required for a Felon to purchase a firearm. Usually they enforce the State laws. You may have to talk to the State Police. I am assuming that your rights have been restored. If they haven't been restored then you will have to have them restored and recognized by the state you live in as well as the BATF.
Ignorance of the law or someone making a mistake at a gun show does not make the transaction legal and could land you a long prison sentence.
