    Default Caught Stealing

hi! i recently was working for a grocery store. I'm not going to get into why i did what i did because its just an excuse. what happened was i had stole some money out of the till close to $1800 over a period of about a year. i found out that they caught it all on video. although the video is not very clear of me taking the money they no because of the voided reciepts i did. i quit the next day before they could catch me in the act. the loss prevention person called me at home and wants me to go talk to him and confess and he said he wont get anyone else involved if i talk to him and come clean but i must confess to everything that happened. i dont know if thats just a lure to get me in their to confess or if he will keep his word. can you please offer me some advice on what to do. i live in nevada. thank you for your help.

Loss Prevention does not have to tell you the truth. $1800.00 is alot to just ignore. I suspect at very least they will want repayment. Perhaps thats all but there is no guarantee. Not meeting with LP will likely result in them turning over evidence to Police and let them arrest you and seek restitution through courts. The meeting could result in same or perhaps all they want is their money and a payment plan can be arranged and if followed no criminal charges. $1800.00 makes this a felony in any state so any offer of no criminal charges is a good one if they hold to it. I suggest you go to meeting but take an Attorney with you

Never believe what they are telling you to get you to confess. They are lying, and they are not making their offer in writing, so they can, and most likely will, just change their mind. Deception is a common interrogation technique. Don't fall for it. If their evidence really was convincing, they would already have called the police. If they even bother talking to you, it must be that they don't really have much and would rather get a confession.

You may get in trouble in any case, but psychologically, it feels worse if trouble results from your efforts to be honest and avoid worse consequences. This is so even if you are punished more if you don't cooperate.

If they call you again, refuse to talk and tell them that if they want anything, they can write to you. That way, at least you will have some evidence in your hands, and they may be reluctant to write down things that they are saying verbally and that could just be lies. Besides, an offer not to prosecute made in writing may be worth something, whereas verbal promises are hard to prove.
