    Unhappy Name Change In Florida

I hope someone could point me in the right direction. My boyfriend is 19 and when he tried to get an ID from the DMV he first realized his birth certificate states the wrong name: Baby Boy. His social is right. Because of this discrepency he cant get a picture ID. Without a picture ID almost everything is impossible. He tried to contact NY where his birth certificate is from and they said since it was both the first and the last name he needed to change on it he had to get a legal name change. What are the best (and hopefully least expensive as we dont have much funds) to get this process going?

And as an FYI - his parents passed away when he was young and his grandmother (his caregiver) passed away a few months before he turned 18.

    Start by researching here:

    http://www.flcourts.org/gen_public/f...es/index.shtml
    -------------

The form you are looking for is 12.982a:

    http://www.flcourts.org/gen_public/f...rules/982a.pdf

If that PDF doesn't work for you the first link has options for downloading the form in different formats.
    -------------

You can find information for your jurisdiction here:

    http://www.flcourts.org/gen_public/f...help/map.shtml

    ----------------

    This site summarizes the procedure:

    http://www.floridanamechange.com/nam...procedures.php
    -----------

For further information, see section 68.07, Florida statutes.
    ------------------

You should expect that it will cost at least several hundreds of dollars.

ouch. I had spoken to a lady who specializes in filling out forms. She quoted us 200.00 for the forms and another 300 for court fees. So i take it this is not outrageous then?

out of curiosity do married women go through the same steps to get their name changes after marriage?

If you choose to use a lawyer the process will be easier, but then you pay for their time. The filing fees will be there either way.

The information I provided above is something a person can do pro se. (If you believe he can do it without help from an attorney.)

Woman who get married and want the same name as their husband go through a different process.
