I went to my diversion interview last week and wanted to let you all know how it went. I had to sign a document admitting my crime. Then I met with the interviewer and she asked me why I had shoplifted. I told her I had done it because I thought I could get away with it. She said she appreciated my honesty.
I have to attend two different classes: a "Life Strategies" class and a "Theft" class. They're going to cost me about $200 total to take, but I won't have to pay and court fees or fines.
After completing the classes, I have to write a report explaining what I learned from them. She said if I complete that report and show proof I'm completed the courses, then the charges will be dropped and I won't have to attend court again.
She also explained to me that while I won't have a record for conviction for shoplifting, I WILL always have a record that will show I was given a ticket for shoplifting and that I went through the diversion program.
I hope this helps anyone going through the same thing. The whole experience has been mortifying, embarrassing, and humiliating. I've definitely learned my lesson.
