    Default Emancipation and Financial Aid

I am 17 y/o (will be 18 in january). My mother died of cancer when I was 9. When she died, the one thing she asked was that my sisters and I go to college. With that, family and friends donated money to a bank account for us. Well, my dad got remarried and has had a lot of financial issues in the past years. I am in my senior year of high school and my future college years are coming faster then I anticipated. my dad and step-mom informed me that they aren't going to pay for my college. I work and pretty much support myself. I bought my own car, I pay for gas, I pay for insurance, I buy my own food, I just got done paying for my senior pictures. I pretty much am financially on my own. I know that I WILL not get any financial aid because my dad makes over $100,000 a year. I am wanting to look into getting emancipated so that I can get more financial help because I already am, supporting my self and come college it will be very hard. What do I do? I don't want to go through a big legal battle if it isn't going to benefit me? My aunt and uncle are both lawyers and have mentioned this before but, they will not advise me to it, as my dad is their brother. What do I do?

    Default Emancipation & Financial Aid

Within the context of emancipation laws, you will automatically be emancipated when you reach the age of 18. But colleges will often expect contribution from parents even when the students enrolled are clearly adults, particularly where there isn't an extended period of self-support prior to enrollment. You should check the policies of your college financial aid office, and see what documentation they would require to extend financial aid without consideration of your father's income.
