I moved to California in August of 2000 and found out several months later that I had been sued (October 2000) in civil court in Kansas for $313 (my old college roommate at Kansas University called me in December of that year to tell me that the cops had been by looking for me saying I had written a bad check). I never recieved a single piece of paper from the courts or the grocery store that sued me even though I had forwarded my address through the post office.
I have had several background checks for jobs and nothing has come up the few times that I have been pulled over by the police in California. I honestly don't know if I would have ever bothered with it if not for school.
I have been accepted into the nursing program where I go to school and my class starts in mid-Janurary. I know they do a background check before you are ever allowed to set foot in a hospital, but I don't know how extensive the background check is. I think they are mainly looking for violent offenses and drug related issues but I would be only guessing. I would rather take care of the problem now then risk it preventing me from finishing nursing school later on. I keep my nose pretty clean (not even a speeding ticket in 11 years) and I don't want something like this to tarnish my chances at a better life.
How do I find information online on where and how to send the money owed? I looked up the Douglas County Courts website for Kansas but couldn't find anything on where to send money or find out how much is owed (I am sure that fees were added at some point).
