    Default Co-Worker Makes Slanderous Remarks

Can I sue someone I work with for this? A girl I work with found out I was charged with shoplifting (somewhere other than work) and started telling people I did it and that I put a bunch of things in my purse and blah blah blah. (things that weren't true even and I hadn't gomne to court yet) Then my union asked our store manager to have her stop. I got suspended from work until the outcome of my case. My lawyer plans to get it dropped and I'll return to work after that. It was just a misunderstanding. Now the girl is telling people I was fired and I wasn't. I haven't even had court yet. I'm sure she's said much more things but those are the ones I'm concerned about right now. Can I sue her or do anything about this? To make matters worse she's my supeviser's daughter/ and a co worker. This is in ohio

You were accused of shoplifting, with criminal charges resulting from the accusation. You were suspended because of the criminal charge.

How did her false statements cause you any economic loss?

She went around telling people I was guilty and that someone she knew called the sheriff and they said the items were put into my purse and all of that information was not true. It is not how it happened and it wasn't even sheriff. She is also telling people since I'm guilty I got fired. I've not even gone to court to be found not guilty yet, and not fired either. After my name is cleared in court it will be imbarrasing to go back to work because of everything she's said and that would be a loss. She's "the boss's daughter" how can I get over something like that.

One thing that people fail to take into consideration is human nature. The girl has the bare bones of the story right and the fact that you are not employed at the store at this time may lead people to believe that you have, indeed, been fired.

It's only really slander if it is blatantly false.
