Default Responsibility For Legal Costs For Custody in California

OK, not married really but in a custody dispute with a child born out of wedlock.

I'm wondering (in California) - is each party responsible for their own legal costs, or can the other party try to have their legal bills paid as part of the settlement?

We both make about the same money annually.

Either of you or both of you can request that attorney's fees be awarded, however, whether or not they are in fact awarded is up to the judge.
