Default Grand Theft and 2nd Degree Burglary

my husband is being charged with grand theft and 2nd degree burglary. I want to know what the consequences he might face after all is said and done. The property was recovered and this is his first offense. We can't afford a lawyer so we're stuck with a public defender. I am not too familiar with any of this law stuff but I've heard that most public defenders do not do much for you. Can someone give me some guidance as to where this is all going?

Its impossible to look up laws as you failed to say what state your in. However both these charges are felony and could mean prison

    We're in California...Sorry.

He had his first court date a couple days ago and i noticed that the judge was dropping similar and some same charges to misdemeanors instead of felonies.

He should ask his lawyer what plea bargain he is likely to be offered, and what the likely sentence is given his record.
