Someone I know was found guilty by jury of possession of controlled substance. The judge sent him to take a drug test and he ran instead. Before this happened, he was stopped for a DUI and pled guilty. After the drug charge, he found a tool box and instead of turning it in, he gave it to a friend who called a locksmith to get it open and found out it belonged to a company that was broken into. He wasn't the one who broke into the place. He hasn't been picked up on this charge because by the time it came around, he was out of the state. All this time he was on drugs really bad. Since he has left the state (California) and the druggies he used to hang out with, he has cleaned up. He's no longer doing drugs. He has an awesome job (that he doesn't want to lose), and he's found the love of his life. He's living life as a great citizen and his bosses really don't want to lose him. He want's to turn himself in and get all of his past straightened out. My question is: Is there anything that can be done to keep him from going to jail? Any kind of plea bargin, restitution, or to ban him from California without permission? I know that people are put in jail to rehabilitate them, but why would they want to put someone in jail that has rehabilitated himself. The jails are full enough as it is and putting someone in jail or prison that has rehabilitated himself is surely a way of putting him back in the same situation he was in and around the same people he was around. Most people that go to jail, just don't care anymore and give up. Any ideas of what I can do to help him?
