I live in Maine, and I have unfortuantly been behind on my bills since my husband lost his job. Rent was due December 1st, but I was unable to pay. We had worked off almost 300 off of our rent for the month. A few weeks later we had an incident... we had a series of snow storms, and our landlord didnt plow, so we paid to have the whole lot cleared out. When they did indeed plow, they left a snowbank at one end of her driveway. The next day we asked them to come back and fix it, they did. Well she was very angered by this, sent me a series of nasty e-mails, and called my home repeatidly screaming profanities. So now she has sent a certified letter to us with a notice to quit (which I don't believe was a proper one, it didnt even list the rent due and she threatened us by saying she was going make some phone calls to get us into trouble, bc my husband doesnt have a license and has driven, and that my car isn't registered), then handed us another one that was more offical, and at the bottom said now we have a 30 day written notice, with no explanation (which we do know she doesnt have to give us one). There are two other tenants in the building that haven't paid rent in two months, and they havent recieved notices of quit. So I think she is going to skip the eviciton to save herself money, but I can't come up with the money in time (have to be out Feb. 1st). Is there anything I can do? I have a 3 year old and it is the middle of winter.... what do I do now????
