Exclamation Prisoner Denied His Prescribed Psychiatric Medications

We need help! My fiance was supposed to go to prison last March, but attempted suicide. He's been in a psychiatric institution and has been treated by a psychiatrist. He's been diagnosed as having severe depression and bipolar. He's been taking Zoloft and Depakote. He was sentenced to one year at a Georgia Probation Detention Center and even though the courts, the DA, even his own lawyer knew of his mental health problems, he was cut off from them the day he entered the system on November 13, 2007 and has suffered severe withdrawals, while having to work long days. He's 40 years old and had never been in trouble, they refused to give him first offenders and sent him to a place they knew would not provide the mental health care he needs. I've begged his lawyer for help - he's even written his lawyer for help, begging for his medication and his lawyer just ignores our pleas. I'm so afraid he's getting to the point of being suicidal again and time is running out. Will somebody please help us???

Not to be cruel but it is not withdrawal he is going thru. This is the end of December and any physical withdrawal from not having his medication is long over with. Not sure what his problems are but be very careful...both medication are HIGHLY addictive. I would encourage him to seek help WITHOUT the use of medications. There are tons of alternatives. The medication cycle is designed to keep him on it.....is that something that he wants?

Your fiance needs to contact a private attorney. He will have to file a suit himself on mistreatment. Being denied medical while an inmate is in violation of federal law. You can also contact the ACLU. They maybe able to help out if he can not afford an attorney.

Ask his psychiatrist to try to communicate with whomever provides psychiatric care at the prison.

Both I and his mother, who has power of attorney have written and called his doctor's office and we get no response. He began treating my fiance when he was in the hospital recovering after his suicide attempt.

Your Fiance has to be the one to file complaint. There are proper ways of doing this. Have him get the paper work from his counselor or case manager. Those are the two people that take care of things for him while he is incarcerated. He needs to file the paper work for a formal complaint. Also he can contact a lawyer as I already stated. He will have to have the lawyer file a suit in court for mistreatment. He is the one that has to do these things. You and his Mother have no say in this even though you have power of attorney. Your Fiance is the one that has to take the action. All you can do is support him.

I sympathize with you and i hope the matter is resolved quickly. I too went through the same thing. My husband was detained, stood in a packed holding cell for two days with other detainees, and was not given his inhaler until today, 1 week later. I was in tears when I saw him yesterday for the first time. I understood why he had not called me at all. He could hardly speak to me during the visit because of the tightness in his chest. He told me he had told them countles times and they simply were not doing anything about it. Its really cold in there too! He cant get a blanket or anything to help him try and avoid the ashtma attack .My husband told me not to complain because he fears that it would make them treat him worse than they already are. I spoke to several people on the outside, before I finally found somone who actually listened. I went through the Chaplain Office at the institution. He was finally able to see a docter today and has been given an inhaler. He should not have been left that long without his medicine and neither should any detainee. I pray you find someone that will help soon. Good Luck!
