    Default Green Card to Citizenship

Ordinarily, you must have lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years before you qualify for citizenship.

There are exceptions. For example, if you obtained your green card through an application for political asylum, the waiting period is reduced to four years. If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen, and remain married and cohabitating with the citizen, the waiting period is three years.
