    Default Discrimination-Fear

I am a contractor working for a very large university, waiting for my contract to end so I can possibly get hired on permanently.
I am now in fear of losing my job.
You see, another contractor (through another agency) had developed a habit of calling me 'sweetie' and 'little lady'. He aslo started hanging around my cubicle area, hovering over me while I was working on calls. He would start telling me what to do on a call, even though I had the situation well in hand and was having no problems. When I would complete a support call, sometimes he would say something like "this is what I would have done" or "if it were me I would have done this" even though I DID NOT ASK FOR his advice. I have done nothing to encourage this behavior, have made no suggestive or leading remarks, so I am quite puzzled. He does not call any of the other women in our department 'sweetie' or 'little lady' and does not hover over other technicians while they are doing their work, interjecting his 'two cents' and interrupting their work. I reported it to my agency. He has stopped calling me pet names, and has stopped hanging around my cubicle and telling me how to do my job and giving unwanted, unsolicited advice. The main reason I held off for nearly two months in saying anything is fear of being labeled a complainer, fear of being seen as less of an equal, fear of retaliation, and fear of losing my job. Although the behavior stopped immediately and my agency is saying they are 'addressing the issue' I am still afraid of going to work today and finding out I'm being let go. Do you have any input that would ease my mind?

    Default Fear of Retaliation

    You're probably being paranoid.

(Sorry if that's not enough reassurance - but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.)

    Default Thank you

Thank you for your input. I am quite stressed out since speaking with my agency. I haven't had much sleep and have been a bit strung since.

Although it may at first have been easier for me to just 'deal with it' as so many people may do, this does nothing for my rights in the workplace, and it was taking its toll.

I do feel a little better. I also am aware that letting me go after I spoke with my agency about the problem would be perceived in a negative way, both by me and the agency, and could put the organization in a sticky situation.

    Default He's at it again

It isn't discrimination; it's just a guy with a big ego, who is self-important, who is a legend in his own mind, (he held a job previously in IT management and now he's working a help desk - wonder WHY that happened, eh?) and has the interpersonal skills of a dead mullet. He is a bully and a talking-to from bossie did not help, obviously. For two days he kept quiet and did not spend any time hovering over my cube (or anyone else's for that matter) but I have to say the blessed silence has been broken. But tonight, I got the upper hand on him, while bossie was well within earshot. When he started in with telling me how to do my job, I asked him "would you like to take this call?" to which he responded "No." I in turn, politely said "Then please leave me alone and let me do my job. I do not need you telling me how to do my work. I think I have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done here – I was changing these settings a minute ago. I mean it. If you don’t stop, I’m going to get up and walk out of here after this call.” This guy is just a bully and I am really tired of it. I am really starting to wonder if he's trying to make my work life here so difficult that I leave out of frustration. Which I won't.
