    Default Shoplifting Son

My son was caught shoplifting in a department store in Oregon. He was cited for Theft III. I had to sign papers from the store: One for no trespass for 2 years and the other was that I have to call to settle the civil penalty in 3-5 business days.
My son and his friends were (after learning how from an internet site) taking items from one part of the store and returning them for cash without a receipt to another part of the store - never leaving the store. The item was a $60 scarf which when caught, the LP "gave" it to him with a store sack and took him to his car - left it in the car - then took him back in the store and I and the police were called.
While I want him punished so he won't continue this, I am not sure what to do next. What can I expect from the civil issue?
    Thank you.

The civil issue will present itself in a day or two when you receive a letter from the store outlining an amount to be paid. Typically, this is between $500 - $1000 but can be based on the amount of the theft.
