    Default Moving Out Charges

    Hello,

I would like to have some advice. We just moved out of an pat in Chapel Hill, and prior to moving out we spoke with one of the office people for our apts about carpet cleaning. Since we were UNC employees, we were told initially that we were allowed a free $50 carpet cleaning. Upon leaving we confirmed verbally that this could be applied when we moved out. We received a bill that charges us for $40 for carpet cleaning. When I called and asked her about it she said our voucher would not be valid, I reminded her of our conversation and she asked me to hold for a second. When she returned, she said that it was actually for stains. We had no stains that could not be removed from the carpet. She sent me pictures, but it looks like the carpet was not even cleaned when they took them! Any advice on how to pursue this would be great.

    Thanks

You could start by declining to pay unless they substantiate the carpet cleaning. Do they do that with their own staff, or with a separate commercial service?

It isn't clear from what you are saying, but it sounds like they are claiming that they gave you a $50 credit toward basic cleaning, but the total was $90 due to stains, thus a $40 balance due.

That's correct, they said that because we are employees we get a free $50 carpet cleaning. They then sent us a bill after we moved out charging $40 for carpet cleaning. When I called her up she initially said the $50 voucher was no longer valid because we no longer live there, but when I reminded her that was not hat she said when we moved out she changed her story and said the $4o was for stains. I asked her what carpet cleaning company she used and she said that she has to ask the maintenance guy and that she will tell him to call be back. He still has not called back. How do I approach this?

I went ahead and sen them and email requesting a letter that substantiates the carpet cleaning. They have not replied yet and I don't expect one until tomorrow. Can they affect my credit score if I don't pay while they send me a letter. How does it work with sending the outstanding charge to a collector? How long can they wait for the charge to be paid?

    Thanks for your advice

Be sure to write down the substance of conversations with the apartment staff/management and print out a copy of the e-mail. Be sure to note the date and time of the conversations and to whom you spoke with. It sounds like your good records or good recall have already been very beneficial.

So they have not replied at all though I know the manager read the email since I received receipt email back. My questions still stand with regards to the possibility that they can affect my credit score. Is it possible that they can do this and how would i know that they did this? Of interest the girl I originally spoke with has not opened her email yet, I sent the email to both her and her manager.

thanks for all the advice so far

Can an unpaid bill affect your credit score? Yes, if it reported to the credit bureaus.
