    Default Medical Bills

I live in MD, but the medical group (run by a large university), whose billing practices, I question is in DC.

Does federal, MD, or DC law or regulation require that the billing statements show payments made by the patient? The statements say that payments received after the statement closing date will be included on the next statement. However, the payments I make, to cover charges not paid by my insurance, are never listed; only the payments made by my insurance company. Each statement is multi-paged with lots of charges and insurance payments. Therefore, I can't determine whether my payments are ever processed. I've written several letters to the billing department and to the head of the group, but have never received a response.

Is there any agency to which I can complain?

What type of statements are you talking about? If you're talking about an explanation of benefits, that would not include your own payments. If you're talking about invoices from the doctor to you, then your invoices should reflect any payments made and your current balance.

    Thanks for your response.

The statements to which I'm referring are invoices from my doctor, who is part of a large group practice attached to a medical school. I've written several letters about this to the group, but have never gotten a response. Is there any governmental body to which I can complain?

    Thanks

One thing you could try is to notify your insurance company of the questionable billing practices. They may advocate for you by calling the group's billing department with your complaint.

Have you mailed your letters certified, RRR with a copy to your personal Physician? At least, then, you'll have the name or initials of the person accepting your letter. Include copies of all previous letters, EOBs and cancelled checks or proof of payment. Since most Physicians in large groups have nothing to do with the billing department, he/she probably doesn't even know what's going on.

    Good luck.
