Hi, first post here. I used the search tool and found lots of great information but I need a bit of help.
While I was traveling abroad, my roommates received a letter from "NCO Financial" demanding payment for a sum of about eight hundred dollars for their client "ebay canada". I wasn't aware of these fees, and when I got back 3 months later, I assumed that it was some sort of scam and ignored it. A few months later, I started receiving calls on my cell phone from NCO. They say that I owe these fees. Then they somehow got my house phone and started calling it, harassing other members of the household and even disclosing information about the alleged debt to them. I asked for proof of debt and they emailed it to me stating I owe the same amount, as well as an old ebay account number, as well as my full name and address. Is this proof of debt? There is no other information than my name and address, a total owed, and an ebay account number. Now, I haven't used that account in ages, and I don't ever recall making listings worth eight hundred dollars, seems real strange. I logged onto the ebay account to see what was going on (hadn't used it in forever) and I'm locked out of it because of the alleged fees. I've sent the collection agency a certified return reciept letter telling them to stop calling and that I don't deal with collections agencies, only the original creditor. What are my options? The only thing I can think of is that I somehow left my ebay account open at a library or an internet cafe or even the school and someone decided to have some fun with it by listing a ton of items and choosing the most expensive options to rack up fees.
