Default Medical Bill Sent to Collections in Minnesota

I went in to the doctor on 05/08/07 for a neck problem I was referred to physical therapy by the dr I saw I specifically asked if that was covered by my ins. and the reply was yes I just needed to pay the co-pay. A month or so later I received a bill for $400 from the physical therapy place for the treatment. I was making small payments on the bill but they turned it over to a collection agency in Oct. and now I'm getting phone calls saying I have to pay it by the end of Nov or its going on my credit report. Isn't there a certain amount of time that the bill has to be outstanding to be able to send to collections or get reported to the credit bureau? Also is there anything that I could do b/c I was unemployed from 06/22/07 to 11/12/07? And is it true that if you are paying on a medical bill they can't legally send it to a collection agency? Thanks!

If you are late in your payments, you risk having the bill sent to collections and having the late payment reported to the credit bureaus.

Ultimately, it is the consumer's responsibility to know what is covered by their particular insurance policy. In the future, call your insurance company BEFORE receiving services.
