    Default Arrested For Shoplifting

i was recently arrested for shoplifting in a local mall in NYS, i had a total of $83.00 worth of merchandise. I was arrested and issued a ticket this is my first offense. What happens from here? I don't want my name in the newspaper, Can the store put that in, or how can I prevent that? Also what happens when I appear at Court, Will someone representing the store be there?

You do not state whether or not you're an adult. If your an adult and the local newspaper has a policy of printing the names of persons commiting crimes there is nothing you can do.

Normally there will be a store represenative in court. If you plead no contest or guilty they will provide the detaila of your theft experience to the court. If you plead not guilty they will be there to testify during your trial.

As Security Consultant says, it depends upon the newspaper's policy. For example, the paper in my town only prints names of adults who've been convicted of a felony or two prior misdemeanors. Sometimes, they will state their policy at the top of that section of the newspaper.

The DA represents the retailer however many retailers pay their Lp staff to be in court if you choose to fight charge. If convicted you will have a criminal record

Check with your lawyer; New York State has a civil remediation program that may allow you to pay for the merchandise, time for the LP folks, and a fine. When satisfied this would result in the criminal charges being deferred. A qualified attorney, which I am not, can address it with you.

That $83 could cost you $1500 or more after it is all said and done.
