Default Caught Shoplifting at Target in Florida

So last wednesday, i got caught shoplifting at a target in FL, close to home.

I took 2 bras. I am positive they didnt see me because they dont have cameras where i took them...it was a stupid thing to do but there is no point in being apologetic. I did it, I've done it before...its my first time getting caught...and my last time ever doing it.

The total stolen was 25 dollars. They held me in the office, filled out a buncha forms for the store took my picture...and then he asked me where i work. I told him i was a substitute teacher and that's when he called the police officer.

The officer filled out a form...a paper arrest. Told me to sign it and to go home. I was so confused and i wanted to go home...thinking that the worst thing that i could do was spend the night before thanksgiving in jail...so i signed all their stuff and left.

My question is...how likely is it that target will prosecute a $25 theft...and since i have a clean record....how likely is it that i can get my chrges dropped and how...

On Friday...I called the store..I talked to the security guys who caught me and told them that this could go deeper than they thought for me...because im an immigrant on provisional residence...they listened...but then one of them said...theres nothing they could do.

If I keep talking to them...will it make it worse?
How do I get them to lower my charges?

You were given a citation with a court date. You have already been charged! You need to consult with a criminal defense Attorney as this can effect your job and your status and ability to remain in this country

Actually...I asked the officer for a copy of whatever I signed and he didnt give me one...He just said check your mail.

That's one of the things that makes me think that they were just trying to scare me...that and the fact that I've called the state attorney's office and nothing's been filed yet. I understand they have up to two years to file something, but I'm thinking that if they don't do it in a few weeks or even months...why would they do it two years from now...see?

I've already talked to a lawyer, but the retainer is incredibly expensive, I could never afford it. So I'm waiting until I get my court date...if I do end up getting a court date...to request a public defender.

It could be weeks or months (depending on how busy court is) before you get this letter with your court date. However you can pretty much bet its coming. If you cannot afford an Attorney request a public defender when you appear in court

The police may have only came to ban you from the store.
They should have told you if they were charging you for a crime or not when they caught you. I can't believe they didn't tell you what was going to happen and you didn't read what you were signing.

I'd call the store back, if you got now were with the security, I'd ask for the store manager. I they arrested you, you have a right to know if there going to file charges against you.

If you don't have "permanent residence", I would be very scared in being charged or even pleading guilty to it or a lessor charge, as it could effect your residence.

Find out if your being charged, and if so, see an "Immigrations lawyer".
A "defense lawyer", might get the charges reduced, but this would still effect your residence.

indeed, on Dec 3 they charged me and i retained a lawyer today.

he's going to try a get me a no pros, if that fails, hes going to try and put me in the stoplift program to then get my charges dropped. I was suspended from my job...and its been ridiculously hard to find a new one. I'm freaking out because of my immigration status...which means...more headaches coming up...

TO EVERYONE OUT THERE: dont do it!! its NOT worth it.

What is no pros? Also does anyone know how long the shoplifting programs are?

I am so sorry for all your problems. When they stopped in in Target, where were you? Did you exit the double doors?

Exiting the doors is not always a must in some cases just passing the last point of sale will suffice
