Default Double Event Booking with No Contract in California

Two weddings booked on the same day by a since terminated catering manager. Bride number 2 has no contract, no signature from the manager on anything and a check on deposit for one quarter of the venue price that she keeps insisting is the venue price she was given.
She's claiming the venue owes her all kinds of compensation when all the venue wants to do is return her two hundred dollars and wish her luck on locating a new venue. Is the venue under any legal obligation when all they have is the clients claims of what the two hundred dollars was for?

If you haven't done so yet, return her deposit. I would include a nice letter indicating your sincere regret that the facility was double-booked, and clearly specifying that the refund is of her $200 deposit toward the $800 rental price. The longer you hang on to her money, the worse it will look for you if and when you go to court.
