Default How Can A Father Protect Himself

I am 21 and I had been seeing a girl for a little over a month and a half. She is going to be 24 in a couple of months. She had informed me about getting pregnant a couple of weeks ago. She had already known my stance on children, I am young, not ready, broke, and know that I would be a bad father. Knowing this she still refuses to get an abortion and tries to tell me that I won't be able to see the kid if its born but I would be forced to pay child support. She is only about 5 weeks pregnant and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to protect myself. She is not fit to raise a child herself, she is on welfare, an alcoholic, and a heavy smoker. Is there anything I can do legally to protect myself?

    Legally protect yourself, how?

When the child is born, paternity will need to be established. If you are the father, you will have the right to file for custody/visitation. If you are not awarded custody, you will have the right and responsibility to help support your child.

If you are not the father, you can go on your merry way.

Had you asked about six weeks ago, I might have suggested these as a method of protecting yourself. Now, as jojo4 says, once the child is born you can request paternity testing to find out whether or not you are the father. If you are you can expect to pay child support and, if you so desire, you can seek visitation or even custody.

You think she is that bad of a person, yet you slept with her???

None of what you have mentioned as to why she is unfit to raise the child will fly in the court.

If he wants to seek custody and can prove his allegations, the court may deem them relevant. If he wants to avoid child support, I agree - calling her a bad mother won't get him anywhere.
