Default Employee Theft by Taking Unauthorized Discounts

Hey, I have a friend who was fired from his job in VA for giving his fellow employees and himself discounts they should not have been receiving. The store sent him a letter stating that they wanted 300 which is what was lost plus an additional 300 dollars in restitution for a total of $600, in accordance with Virginia Code § 8.01-44.4. (B,C)
He is a minor and was interviewed and wrote a statement without the presence of his parents or any legal representation.

Is there any way he can get out of playing the additional 300 dollars and just pay the original amount loss of 300? Also does the employer have to state a reason why they want the additional 300 dollars? And finally my friend says that the initial amount of $300 he says might have been taken, could actually be less. He just said a range of 250-300 dollars because he was scared and under a lot of pressure.

It sounds like a pretty standard civil demand. Typically under civil demand laws, if your friend doesn't pay it, the store can sue for that amount (perhaps more) plus their attorney fees.
