    Default Alienation for Affection

one of my friends just graduated from university and got a decent job in a big company in North Carolina, which is the state recognize the alienation of affection and criminal conversation. She's involved with a married man for 7 years (since she's in college) and recently his wife just found out and threaten her that she's going to sue her and ruin her career. She called and e-mail my friend couple times to threaten her. And she also tracked her down and get her credit card receipts (such as hotel bill, dining bill) while they met (my friend and the married man) in Las Vegas. This man and his wife just currently moved to Arizona from Denver. The questions are:

    1. Can the wife sue her for the alienation of affection?
    2. Is there anything she can do to protect herself?

If the wife were to commence a lawsuit, it would be based upon the jurisdiction where the allegedly wrongful conduct occurred, not the state where your friend is about to move. So the first question depends upon the laws of that state. However, given that the woman is apparently still married to her husband, it would be difficult to prevail under a typical state's law, as the law typically requires the destruction of the marital relationship - something you can't prove if the marriage remains intact.

If she wants to protect herself from the angry wives of her lovers, her best tactic may well be to limit her future relationships to single men.

    Thanks for the reply.

Actually, that wife has mental problem and my friend and that guy are planning to get married once the divorce is completed. However, that wife does not want to leave and start to go crazy: pulling a gun out, chocking the guy, throwing things around, calling and e-mailing to threaten my friend... I agree that she should probably better off dating a single guy to start with but it's too late for her. Everyone has his/her own perspective and I respect that. I don't want to be judgemental. As her best friend, I just want to help her to go throught this hard time. I would like to see if there's anything I can help her. So, except for "limit her future relationship to a single man", is there any other thing she can do?

Unfortunately, as they say, you can't unroll the dice.
