Last Saturday, I, a 16 year old, foolishly decided that it would be a good idea to take a $10 wallet from Marshall's. After going into a fitting room and coming back out, I was stopped by an LP who told me he saw on the video that I took the item. I gave in and told him I did take it.
He took me to the back room after getting a witness, and got my general information (address, phone number, DOB) but didn't pry for more. He didn't call the cops, said there would be no criminal record, and that I was welcome back any time. I was with my friend's mom, who they made sign a piece of paper saying I attempted to steal the item. He said that I would be receiving a civil demand, but only for about $5, which he said was the usual price for items that are $10 or under.
Now, after doing some research, I find that hard to believe, because most people have been talking about $300+ fines. So I have a few questions:
1) What type of fine am I supposed to expect?
2) How long does it take to be delivered, and how long will I have to pay it?
3) Will it be sent to my parents or to me directly (as in the address line)?
4) And is it possible to pay through a credit card, or only a check?
I would really appreciate any answers because I've been kept up at night worrying about this and coming home early to get the mail in case the letter bomb came, so thank you in advance.
