Default Caught Shoplifting at Marshall's in New Jersey

Last Saturday, I, a 16 year old, foolishly decided that it would be a good idea to take a $10 wallet from Marshall's. After going into a fitting room and coming back out, I was stopped by an LP who told me he saw on the video that I took the item. I gave in and told him I did take it.

He took me to the back room after getting a witness, and got my general information (address, phone number, DOB) but didn't pry for more. He didn't call the cops, said there would be no criminal record, and that I was welcome back any time. I was with my friend's mom, who they made sign a piece of paper saying I attempted to steal the item. He said that I would be receiving a civil demand, but only for about $5, which he said was the usual price for items that are $10 or under.

Now, after doing some research, I find that hard to believe, because most people have been talking about $300+ fines. So I have a few questions:

    1) What type of fine am I supposed to expect?

    2) How long does it take to be delivered, and how long will I have to pay it?

    3) Will it be sent to my parents or to me directly (as in the address line)?

    4) And is it possible to pay through a credit card, or only a check?

I would really appreciate any answers because I've been kept up at night worrying about this and coming home early to get the mail in case the letter bomb came, so thank you in advance.

    1) What type of fine am I supposed to expect?
I have no clue where Lp got the $5.00 figure. If that were true it wouldnt be worth the time. Its likely to be between $50.00 - $100.00 would be my guess

    2) How long does it take to be delivered, and how long will I have to pay it?
Impossible to say days, weeks even months. You can pay it right away or make payment arrangement. If you do make arrangement do not be late with payments otherwise they can triple fine or even sue you in court and win.

    3) Will it be sent to my parents or to me directly (as in the address line)?
Since you are a minor the letter should go to your parents

    4) And is it possible to pay through a credit card, or only a check?
When you get the letter there will be contact info on it call and ask.

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this question, but is there a possibility that I will have to appear in court? To restate, the police were never called and the LP made it very clear that I would have no criminal record, and only have to pay the fine. Does this mean I will be okay after I pay the civil demand, whenever it should arrive? Or is there room for more action to be taken by the company?

Until you are arrested or asked to turn yourself in I would not worry

"Until?" Are you being facetious or is that a genuine possibility?

Its very very very unlikely. However they have until the statute of limitations runs out to charge you
