    Default Caught Shoplifting at Rite-Aid

    Location: OR, USA
    Age: 18
    Item taken: soda
    Item value: $1.40
    Record Status: Clean

Funny how a hot day and poor judgement cause you to do some really dumb stuff. Basically here is what happened. I was really thirsty so I decided to go to the nearest store and grab me a soda. Unfortunately I had no money, so I decided to steal(yep, poor choice). So I concealed the item in the pocket of my hoodie and made way for the exit. When I got outside some guy came from around the corner and said something about a soda, but due to the temperature I was kinda dazed and didn't catch what he had said. So I asked him, and he said "The Soda in Your Pocket". This is when I realized that he was an LP. So, I went along with them and gave them their soda back.

They took me to a room in the back of the store and began to question me. Anyways, they questioned me on why I had taken it, and my answer was that I was thirsty and thought I had no money on me(lame excuse). They then asked some un-needed questions like what were my hobby's, etc.

After that they took my Picture, ID, Address, and made me sign a pink slip (Civil demand notice?). I was told that I would not receive any immediate court date's but that it would be arriving in the mail. The cop's were not called and I was escorted from the store, and given a 2-year ban.

So I waited over a month, and...nothing. Until just yesterday I received my SECOND NOTICE in the mail demanding that I send immediate payment of $253.44(which would have been the same amount as the first notice) to their Law office in Florida. The problem is that the first Notice never reached me, and I haven't received any mail containing my court dates...

My question's are, when will I receive my letter for court, and what do you think my charges likely will be? (If any) It say's on the slip they gave me that I was not detected by EAS(electronic survellience) but I know I walked past it on the way to their office.

I understand that I should correct my wrong but I just need some advice on how to do it. Thanks

If the police did not show up id say it is unlikely that you will have to go to court. In any event the letter you recieved in the mail is a civil demand I suggest that you pay it, if you dont the chances of them taking you to both criminal and civil court are much greater. They have a certain amount of time to press charges, if you pay the demand they may not.

Thanks, I'll take your advice and pay the civil demand. From there, I will just have to wait and see what happens.
