Default Possibility of Termination of Employment Over Dating Relationship

Ok, here is the scenerio. I am 23 years of age, and male. I am dating a 16 year old female. The place I work got wind of this, and they believe it to be illeagal. They are currently considering terminating my employment, because they believe that they can not knowingly employ a person who they know to be commiting a criminal act. Here are the facts:

1: My girlfriend's parent knows that I am dating her daughter, and is ok with it. I have full consent.

2: The way my place of employment happened to find out is someone seen me outside of work, and knew the person I was with, and knew she was only 16, and took this information to my boss. I never took any proof, or even reason to believe I was dating into work. I try very hard to seperate my work from personal affairs.

3: My girlfriend turns 17 in 3 months. (I know the laws change even furthur in my favor when she turns 17)

4: I live in the state of Michigan.

    Here are my 2 questions...

First, do they even have a leg to stand on with this? Can they legally fire me due to the fact they got wind of this information?

Second, regardless of the answer to the first question, Is this considered to be an "invasion of Privacy" and if I am infact fired for this, can I seek legal action against them for, "snooping" into matters that I have never brought to their attention, or into their enviroment in any way? (This has gone up before their board of trustees. The fact that it has gone up before the board, and they are currently seeking lawyer information about this has me floored. Even if the answer is returned in my favor the fact that this is going up to the board, just means that they will probably be looking for another reason to fire me. They are very hard sticklers.)

I would appreaciate any and all opnions on this matter. Thank you for your time.

You have failed to mention what kind of employment? If your work at a school or other employment that involves children i can understand your employers ...concern.. at your decision to date a legal child.

With that said...There wouldn't be anything "illegal" in their firing you.

No, this is not an invasion of privacy.

Michigan is an "at will" state and can fire you for any or no reason they wish long as it violates no law. There is no law broken here

It sounds like this employer may have some form of formal disciplinary process.

The answers to your questions are yes and no. They may legally fire you for this and you would have no legal recourse.

Just my two cents worth, knowing that she is only 16 and its already causing you employment problems, why would you continue to date her? There has got to be some girls worthy of dating that are closer to your age. I mean what do you talk about? How her friends are doing in high school? You being 23 should have a bit more maturity than a girl of 16. And if you don't, you should ask yourself why. Just because something is legal doesn't always make it prudent or smart.
