My first question is what will likely happen legally to me in the future based on what I've done today?
What happened is this:
Today I shoplifted $8.45 in batteries. I was stopped after the doorcheck before getting to the parking lot by a male LP and asked for the batteries right then. I handed them over and was escorted back to the security room. (My friend, who used my card, was allowed to continue to his car with our substantial purchases.) A female LP joined us and she took over, saying I was on tape committing this crime, witnessed, and would be prosecuted unless I cooperated. They asked me why I'd done such a petty theft, photocopied my DL, and took my Costco card (which I'd had since 2001). The female LP asked if I wanted to go home. I said sure. After some questioning she said I had to sign a statement in order to leave. The male LP took a photograph of the batteries and package I'd discarded in a trash receptacle. He also took a photograph of me. They also had a receipt run off by a cashier. They said that I'd be banned from Costco's for a year or two and that I'd be reported to their headquarters in Seattle. They said I could reapply for a new Costco card after period by speaking with their store headquarters. They said my signing the statement, giving up my card, being banned for a year or two was as far as the matter would go. I asked awkwardly if this was true or a ruse because the female LP couldn't elucidate as clearly as I wished, seemed either vague or evasive, and was very beligerant about answering my questions. But then she apologized, saying 'it was her time of month." The two left the room. I was alone while I was reading the statement I had to sign, and guess I took too long because a Chicago cop stuck his head in and snarled something. I couldn't understand him since he spoke to my deaf ear. I replied to what I thought I heard, he said something nasty me. I said I was slightly deaf, he snarled again, and slammed the door behind him. I didn't see him again. The female LP came back in, got the signed statement, seemed relieved, and said she was doing me a favor because I'd committed a crime, repeating that quite a number of times. She escorted me out of the store and told me the best thing for me to do was to go home and have a stiff drink. I said I didn't drink. She said good for me. And that was that.
My second question is do you have any general comments about this event.
Thanks in advance.
