    Default Retail Fraud at Meijer

    Hi -

Nearly three years ago, a friend and I were caught shoplifting about $15 worth of hair product from Meijer in Michigan... As far as we know, no cops were called, and we think it was the store detective/officer who wrote up the reports, gave us 90 days probation FROM Meijer, and we had to pay 10x the amount we took. We paid the fine, and that was that. I remember him saying we could never get a job at Meijer, and that we'd have a "hard time getting a job" in the future, I think. Well, I have had the same job for years and it wasn't until now that I have had to apply for a new one in a different area of the state, and with all the apps I have filled out I havent had any luck. Is this misdemeanor on my record, or was that specifically something through Meijer? How can I find out? Hopefully, I'm just having bad luck with the job search and it's not ME...

You say the police (and courts) weren't involved, so you have no criminal record from the incident.

It is possible that they entered you in a database of shoplifters; but it is impossible to know from what you posted if that is having any effect on you, or if you are just being affected by a poor job market. (Such a database is most likely to affect you if you are applying for jobs with retailers.)

hmm.. thanks for the reply aaron, i hope you're right. i didn't know there was such a database and i'm really hoping it's just a crappy job market in my area of the state right now..

i don't remember what the paperwork said that i got about the incident when it happened, it's hidden away somewhere ridiculous, but my friend who was also involved said it was just a "meijer" record.. is that possible, or is it something that other employers could check up on as well?

also, is there any way to find out if i AM in such a database? i just haven't received but one call-back about a job and i have applied for about 20, it just seems like something would arise. do employers do such a background check immediately after getting an application? i wish that i could find out if i am in such a database.
