Emancipation Law in Virginia

hi.
I am the best friend of a 16 year old girl who needs out of her parents custody. Her father is constantly taking stabs at her with insults that are meant to push her in sports, which is common with many families except to the extent that HE does. He tries to force her to eat right, train right, do everything that a personal trainer would want to do, not a father. A number of other things are factors in her decision to want emancipated. Her brother escaped the same parents by doing drugs, and died last december. Her sister escaped them by burying herself in her school work and blamin herself, and she currently has an emotional problem. My girlfriend would like a different alternative, one that doesnt result in her being like her 2 siblings. This is truly the only way.

I have read a lot about this, and all the VA law states is that u need a petition. Is there no paperwork? I am also assuming that this would be alot smoother if her parents would agree to the emancipation. Is parental permission required? Because her parents would never agree to it. Thanks.

Virginia's emancipation law provides:

Any minor who has reached his sixteenth birthday and is residing in this Commonwealth, or any parent or guardian of such minor, may petition the juvenile and domestic relations district court for the county or city in which either the minor or his parents or guardian resides for a determination that the minor named in the petition be emancipated. The petition shall contain, in addition to the information required by § 16.1-262, the gender of the minor and, if the petitioner is not the minor, the name of the petitioner and the relationship of the petitioner to the minor.
