    Default Finding Somebody's Criminal History

My mother remarried 25+ years after divorce from my father. Her new husband is from California, they met in Ga and are now living in NC.

He had no drivers license and expressed no interst in obtaining one, said it expired many years ago and, since he has no car, why bother. He uses my mothers second car and drives everywhere.

In California, 35 years ago, he said he served time for drug trafficking. He has no contact with his biological children and his first wife is dead of cancer.

Something about him just doesn't sit right with me. He has no birth certificate, no SS card,no personal records at all. He was nice to my wife, daughter and myself while we visited last week.

My mother wants to come Canada to visit often and wants him to come along, but no passport. He has been putting off gathering paperwork for FBI background checks, getting a license and birth certificate, isn't interested in getting a passport.... nothing. Its as though he trying to stay under the radar, so to speak.

I know my mother doesn't want to see his faults, and I don't want to bring to her attention. She really wants to believe this guy is OK, but I'm not so sure.

How can I find out about his charges and background in California, GA and NC without his consent or knowledge? I checked with Dept of Corrections in Ga and cannot find any info on him. Does Cali or NC have a similar site. I have not been able to find one. Maybe someone here knows????

Most states are going to have criminal record databases but they often have restrictions on who can access them and the general public usually cannot. You can also retrieve such information from the National Crime Information Center but here again there are restrictions on who can access the information and in my experience it is normally law enforcement agencies. I have used some of the public record searches advertised on the internet and have retrieved some information that way.

Criminal history and other information will not be available directly from NCIC for private individuals. Some states may permit checks for some or all manner of criminal offender records within their database, but many states do not permit this. California is one such state that does NOT make its criminal history information available to the public.

However, if you knew where he lived in CA, the local courthouse might have a record of his criminal proceedings (provided he was tried in the same county and that they still have records from 35 years ago ... a slim chance, actually).

The best suggestion might be to run his name through a couple of different internet background companies and see what pops up. These companies compile lists of public records including criminal dispositions from local courts. However, MOST the criminal info you might retrieve from CA would be no more than 7 years old for a host of reasons.
