Default Using Father's Last Name On a Birth Certificate, or Changing Name After Marriage

My best friend is going to have a baby in a couple of weeks and is unwed. However, she and the father plan on getting married in a year or two. In the meantime, everyone says it would be easier to give the baby her last name and change it when they get married. However, his parents argue that it will be very difficult to change it later on. Is it difficult and expensive in Illinois to change the baby's name when they get married? Which would be easier and cheaper? If it matters, she is in Headstart, Wick, and other programs to help mothers.

How do they think it would be easier for the child to have her last name in the meantime?

If she is considering changing the name when they get married, she should just go ahead and do it now. Why wait?

Sorry Neal...I'm gonna play Devils Advocate here...

If Mom changes her mind about marring this guy will she want the child to have Dad's last name? After Mom amd Dad marry it would be very easy to pitition the courts to change the childs name...

    just something to think about...

I understand, but the father of the child can still petition at that time to have the name changed. If he does that and she opposes the name change, she may have to end up shelling out money for court.
