Default USCIS vs. Dept of State

Hello - I just had a fiance visa approved by USCIS (got the email notification) but I haven't received any paperwork yet. When I called Customer Service they mentioned that I would next need to be approved by the Department of State's National Visa Center. I didn't realize that there was this next step - I thought they would just automatically send me an interview date at the embassy. Does anyone know how long it takes to process between USCIS approval and the Dept of State? My fiance is a British citizen, if that makes any difference. (I realize this is not a law question per se - I just didn't know who else to ask!)

It is going to depend upon how backlogged the State Department is. Probably not less than four weeks.
