We live in New Jersey. My husband received a letter from his ex yesterday stating his 14 year old son wants to change his last name to that of his stepfather. Seven years ago my husband had to give up his rights to visitation due to parental alienation and only after a long, expensive court "battle." Since that time he has faithfully made court ordered child support payments of $1350 per month. Last year his oldest entered college and without any input on our parts, we were forced to pay half of an expensive private school education for his daughter. No doubt we will do the same for his son when the time comes. Asking permission for the name change is like rubbing salt in an open wound. How does a name change affect child support if at all? It is possible his adult daughter may have already changed her name. Should my husband be responsible to pay child support and education expenses for somone who takes another man's name?
