My son recently had some lab work performed for which he provided blood samples. The tests that were to be preformed were a CBC, Sedimentation rate and a Lyme Disease test.
To his surprize when he got his explanation of benefits from his insurance company, he discovered that not only were these 3 abovementioned lab tests run on the blood that he supplied but his doctor had also sent some samples of synovial fluid (that he'd drawn off his knee during an office visit) directly to the lab for VERY VERY expensive DNA testing. One test ran on this fluid alone cost over $800.00!
My question is, since my son did not provide the synovial fluid to the lab, can this lab legally bill my son for these tests?
My son had absolutely no idea the doctor was going to send his synovial fluid for testing and he signed absolutely nothing giving the doctor permission to do this! In fact the only thing he signed at the doctors office was permission for the doctors office to release his medical information to relevant third parties (such as his insurance company).
