Hello,
I recently got a job at Petsmart. I filled the application online, they did the background check, they called me in for an interview, I passed the drug test, they liked me and the hours and position I was willing to fill, so they hired me officially. Today was my first day, and I started training. During the time of the interview, I told them that I was planning to move to Germany next year so I would only be working there for one year. I was VERY straightforward about this, I said it straight up during the interview so that there would be no questions and to make sure it was ok with them. Obviously it was at the time or they wouldn't have hired me. Today towards the end of my shift, the manager called me into her office and asked me to tell her again how long I could stay. I told her again that I would be staying about a year because of my planned move to Germany. I told her the same exact thing that I said initially during the interview. It was as straightforward as, "I'm only going to stay here about a year, I'm moving to Germany next year". There was no room for confusion. But here she is asking me again, and then says that they don't want me anymore because they're looking for long term people.
What can I do about this? Can I ask for some kind of compensation, a fine maybe? I think this is completely ridiculous. I shifted my sleeping pattern completely backwards within three days so I could fill the shift they needed, I bought $40 worth of pants so I could follow their dress code, I did everything asked of me during training, I was entirely straight forward about my plans for moving. The worst part is that I was counting on this job, I already made an entire new routine and did an estimate of my paychecks.
Do I just have to deal with this? I don't think I even want the job anymore after this, I'm just frustrated that they officially gave me the job and promised it to me, then turned around and said I can't stay. It's entirely their fault, I did everything necessary to make sure that they were ok with my needs for leaving next year. They stated that their reason was "misunderstanding", so either they don't have a brain cell in their skull or they're not telling me the truth. Like I said, I was completely straightforward, there was no room for confusion.
Any suggestions?
