Default Charged for Utilities After Moving out

I lived in Massachusetts (I now live in CA) where my electricity and gas/heating were provided by a company with the same name, NSTAR. I shut off my aqccount and told them I was moving, assuming that both accounts from the same company would be discontinued. My electricity wasn't and I received a bill today for almost $1200 for the apartment where I haven't lived in almost 2 years. Am I responsible for it? What steps should I take to make the current occupant pay for this?

Explain better what you did. Did you shut off both accounts, or did you only shut off one and "assume" that the other would be shut off automatically?
