Hi,
I am a senior at a small Texas high school and I recently applied to be on the yearbook staff. However, I did not make it. At first I was let down but I got over it. About 2 weeks later, a graduate friend of mine who was on the same yearbook staff last year (who happens to be a girl) randomly commented that the teacher sponsor (and sole yearbook staff "employer") had said at the end of last year (when the applications were being considered) that she did not want ANY males on the staff.
My delima is that I KNOW that this is neither legal nor moral but I do not know what I can do about it. There were some very qualified male applicants to be on staff but she turned them all down because of their gender. Not to brag on myself but I am well qualified to take the position. I have experience with photoshop, newspaper layout (which is generally the same concept as Yearbook layout, only more professional), and photography (from my newspaper job). Yet, she did not even consider me.
The female sponsor of the yearbook selected 7 girls out of the 11 total applicants (4 were male), shortening her yearbook staff by 2. Last year, the group of 9 girls already had to cram to meet deadlines. Making a staff of 7 was not logical, but it was apparently not worth employing males to help out with yearbook.
What should I do?
